QUICK ANSWER

The gold price forecast for Thursday 9 July 2026 centres on spot at 4,065, a second down session after losing the 4,100 handle. Real yields at 4.57% and hawkish June FOMC minutes are overwhelming the war-driven haven bid. The 4,070 support is the pivot, with 4,020 and 4,000 beneath and 4,100 now overhead into next week’s US CPI.

NAMED LEVELS WORTH WATCHING

↓ Downside liquidity (support)

  • 4,070, the critical near-term support gold is pressing right now, the pivot the desk is watching into CPI.
  • 4,020, the next support on a confirmed break of 4,070, first liquidity beneath the pivot.
  • 4,000, the psychological round handle that arms the next leg down if it fails.

↑ Upside liquidity (resistance)

  • 4,100, the round level gold just lost, now the first resistance on any bounce.
  • 4,120 to 4,140, the next resistance shelf above 4,100.
  • 4,165, the bigger cap above, the level a real reclaim has to defeat.

The Macro Setup Behind Today’s Gold Price Forecast

Gold is doing the opposite of what the headlines suggest it should. A live Gulf war, US strikes on 90 Iranian targets overnight (Bushehr, Chabahar, Golestan, per Al Jazeera and CNN reporting), Iranian retaliation on 85 US targets in Bahrain and Kuwait, and Trump declaring the MoU over. Normally that tape prints a straight-line haven bid in gold. Instead, spot has lost 4,100 and is sitting near 4,065, on its second down session. The mechanism is not subtle: oil surged around 10% over two sessions into the low-to-mid $70s, that re-arms the inflation impulse, and the June FOMC minutes released yesterday landed hawkish. The June FOMC minutes held 3.50 to 3.75%, flagged upside inflation risks from AI capex, tariffs and the Middle East, and a few officials judged another hike could become appropriate. Chair Warsh withheld his dot. That is a higher-for-longer signal in every meaningful sense.

The dollar didn’t hold the gains. DXY opened near 101.11 after the minutes, then faded to 100.85 and is chopping in a 100.31 to 101.50 corridor, capped by the 200-period average around 101.02. That is the fake-out. Softer US growth and labour data underneath the hawkish read pulled the dollar back, but the US 10-year yield stayed sticky at 4.57%, up from 4.50%. Real yields are the transmission. In prior rate-repricing episodes gold sold off into firmer real yields even with geopolitical risk in the background, and that is the exact template repeating: gold losing 4,100 despite an active Gulf war is the tell. The full live read on this decomposition is the kind of thing that drops daily inside the MACRO MASTERY desk.

The catalyst next week is US CPI on Tuesday 14 July, 8:30am ET. May CPI landed at +4.2% year on year and the June nowcast is around 3.96%, still sticky. That print, not the war, is what shapes the tape into the 28 to 29 July FOMC. Until then the desk expects choppy consolidation with a fake-out bias, possibly a bit more dollar pullback first, then the higher-for-longer structure reasserts. Read the dollar and real yields first, gold second.

Multi-Timeframe Read On Gold

Daily structure has shifted. Losing 4,100 on a closing basis, the level the market defended repeatedly through late June, converts that round from support into first resistance. The daily tape is now printing lower highs into a compressed range around 4,055 to 4,075, with the 4,070 support directly beneath spot. That is not a trend day, it is a pressure day, and the distinction matters. A trend day gets sold on every bounce, a pressure day chops until the catalyst.

H4 shows the same story with more texture. The last two sessions have failed at 4,100 twice, which is now a defended resistance in the strict sense, two touches, both rejected. Beneath, the 4,070 handle has held once, so it is not yet a defended support, it is a level being tested. The MACRO MASTERY desk covers the tape live as these tests resolve, particularly around US session opens where the real-yield beta shows up hardest.

Intraday, the choppy-consolidation regime is doing exactly what the sentiment read suggests: no clean directional flow, fake-outs both sides, spread widening around the London fix. The one variable the desk keeps modelling is a fresh Hormuz shock, the only mechanism that overrides the yield story on a tape-changing basis. Absent that, structure leans lower.

Scenario Map For The Gold Price Forecast

Bull scenario, ~35% weight

The dollar pullback extends before CPI, real yields ease off 4.57%, and a Hormuz-tanker headline forces a fresh haven bid. In that case, gold tends to reclaim 4,100 first, and a sustained close back above that round handle opens the 4,120 to 4,140 resistance shelf as the next test. The bull case only becomes structural if 4,165 gets defeated on a daily close, which would say the war premium has genuinely reasserted over the yield story. Anything short of that is a mean-reversion bounce inside a broken structure, not a trend reversal.

Bear scenario, ~65% weight

CPI prints hot or in line, real yields firm further, the dollar reasserts, and 4,070 fails on a closing basis. In that scenario, gold tends to drift toward 4,020 as the first liquidity pocket, then the 4,000 psychological handle. A confirmed break of 4,000 arms the next leg down and would represent a full higher-for-longer capitulation in the metal, even with the war live. The desk weights this heavier because it is the current structure, not a projection: gold is already on its second down session and the transmission mechanism (oil up, yields up, dollar structurally supported) is intact.

WHAT WOULD INVALIDATE THE READ

A daily close back above 4,100 with the US 10-year yield rolling under 4.50% would break the real-yields-dominate thesis. A tanker strike or an outright Hormuz closure would force a haven bid that overrides the yield story regardless of CPI. A cool CPI print on 14 July (well below the ~3.96% nowcast) that collapses the higher-for-longer pricing would similarly flip the structure. Any of those forces a full reassessment.

Final Takeaway On The Gold Price Forecast

Gold at 4,065 is telling us real yields have overwhelmed the war bid, and 4,070 is the pivot that decides the next 200 points. Above 4,100 the bounce lives, below 4,070 the 4,020 and 4,000 handles come into play, and CPI on 14 July is the catalyst that resolves the chop. Read the 10-year yield and the dollar first, gold second, and the tape stops looking counterintuitive.

FAQ: Gold Price Forecast Questions Traders Are Searching

Why is gold falling despite the Iran war?

Gold is falling because real yields and higher-for-longer Fed pricing are overwhelming the haven bid. Oil surged around 10% on the Gulf strikes, and that re-armed the inflation impulse, which forced the US 10-year yield to 4.57% and gave the June FOMC minutes their hawkish edge. In prior rate-repricing episodes gold sold off even with geopolitical risk in the background, and that pattern is repeating now.

What is the key support for gold on 9 July 2026?

The critical near-term support is 4,070, which spot is actively pressing after losing the 4,100 round handle. Beneath 4,070, the next liquidity pocket sits at 4,020, followed by the 4,000 psychological handle. A confirmed daily close below 4,000 would arm a deeper leg lower, though that requires further real-yield firming or a hot US CPI print on 14 July.

What did the June FOMC minutes say about gold?

The minutes did not mention gold directly. They held the funds rate at 3.50 to 3.75%, flagged upside inflation risks from AI capex, tariffs and the Middle East, and noted a few officials judged another hike could become appropriate. Chair Warsh withheld his dot. That higher-for-longer signal firms real yields, which is structurally negative for non-yielding assets like gold.

When is the next US CPI release?

US CPI for June lands on Tuesday 14 July at 8:30am ET. May CPI printed at +4.2% year on year and the June nowcast sits around 3.96%, still sticky and elevated. That print is the primary catalyst into the 28 to 29 July FOMC decision, and it will resolve the current choppy consolidation regime one way or the other.

Does the dollar always move gold in the opposite direction?

Usually, but the more precise driver is real yields, not the dollar itself. On 9 July the dollar is chopping (DXY at 100.85 after failing to hold post-minutes gains) yet gold is still selling because the US 10-year yield stayed firm at 4.57%. When yields and the dollar diverge, watch yields: they are the more reliable input into non-yielding-asset pricing.

What would make gold reclaim 4,100?

Three catalysts. First, a fresh Hormuz-tanker or strait-closure headline that forces a mechanical haven bid overriding the yield story. Second, a cool US CPI print on 14 July that collapses the higher-for-longer pricing. Third, an easing of the US 10-year yield back under 4.50%. Any single trigger can force a reclaim, and a sustained daily close above 4,100 would open the 4,120 to 4,140 shelf.
