The GBP/USD forecast for 9 July reads as choppy consolidation. Cable is trading at 1.3355, wedged inside a 1.325 to 1.345 corridor after the dollar failed to follow through on hawkish June FOMC minutes. The support that matters is the 1.3150 June low. The cap is the 1.3400 band. US CPI on 14 July is the resolver.
Named Levels Worth Watching
Upside liquidity (resistance)
- 1.3400 · the 200-day moving average band, the cap on the range and first liquidity above current price.
- 1.3450 · the mid-1.34s, the top of the current chop and the level a break needs to hold above to change the near-term read.
Downside liquidity (support)
- 1.3300 · the first support inside the range, the near-side of the corridor.
- 1.3150 · the June low and 20-day average, the support that matters, the pivot for the lower-high thesis.
- 1.3000 · the major round-number floor sitting under the whole structure.
The Macro Setup Behind This GBP/USD Forecast
Cable is not really a sterling story this morning. It is a dollar story with a UK ticker attached. Yesterday’s June FOMC minutes, released on 8 July, printed hawkish and higher-for-longer. The committee held at 3.50 to 3.75%, flagged upside inflation risks from AI investment, tariffs and the Middle East, and a few officials judged another hike could become appropriate. Chair Warsh withheld his own dot, which was the tell. The Federal Reserve minutes were the setup. The dollar’s response was the payoff, and it didn’t happen.
DXY opened near 101.11, poked at the 200-period average at 101.02 and fell straight back into the 100.31 to 101.50 corridor, sitting at 100.85 as the desk writes. That is the fake-out. Hawkish central-bank read, no dollar follow-through, softer US growth and labour data underneath doing the counter-work. The market is not fading the Fed’s message. It is waiting for the June CPI print on Tuesday 14 July at 8:30am ET, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases into a jittery tape. May CPI ran +4.2% year-on-year. The June nowcast is roughly 3.96%, still sticky. Until that number lands, the tape is chop, not trend. The desk’s read on the GBP/USD forecast is exactly that: consolidation with a fake-out bias, and the risk that lower-highs get built before CPI resolves the range.
Structurally, the picture still leans dollar-up. US 10-year yields are at 4.57%, up from 4.50%, elevated on the oil-driven inflation impulse. WTI has surged roughly 10% over two sessions on the Gulf war escalation, sitting in a 71.8 to 75.3 range. Overnight into 9 July the US launched a second night of strikes on 90 Iranian military targets along the coast (Bushehr, Chabahar, Golestan); Iran retaliated on 85 US targets in Bahrain and Kuwait, per CNN and Al Jazeera reporting. Trump said the MoU is over. Oil spiking rearms the inflation impulse, which reinforces higher-for-longer rates, which is structurally dollar-supportive. Cable typically tracks the broad dollar through a data run, so the desk treats this GBP/USD chop as a dollar-repricing range with the UK leg secondary until CPI decides the Fed path. Multi-Timeframe Read: What the Chart Is Actually Doing
On the daily, cable is doing textbook post-selloff repair. Price recovered from the late-June low near the 1.3150 zone and is now grinding sideways inside a 1.325 to 1.345 band. The 200-day moving average sits in that upper 1.3400 band and has capped every rally attempt this week. That is not coincidence. That is the biggest cross-asset trend filter in FX doing its job, and it lines up with the 1.3450 mid-1.34s chop top. Above sits air until the next meaningful liquidity pocket. Below sits the 1.3300 near-range support, then the 1.3150 pivot which is both the June low and the 20-day average confluence.
On H4, the structure is a series of lower highs into the 1.3400 cap with the higher lows holding above 1.3300 so far. That is what a consolidation triangle looks like before a data catalyst. The tape is not choosing a side. It is compressing. The volume of the last three sessions has been light in the London morning, heavier in the New York overlap, which fits the “waiting for CPI” reading. Intraday, watch the 1.3355 spot area as the balance point. Drift above and the market is probing the 1.3400 cap. Drift below and the 1.3300 shelf gets tested.
Scenario Map Into US CPI
Bull scenario (roughly 35% weight). The dollar pullback extends before CPI. Softer US data continues to fade the hawkish minutes, DXY loses the 100.31 fib support, and cable presses the 1.3400 200-day average band. In this case, GBP/USD tends to drift toward the 1.3450 mid-1.34s chop top, and a clean daily close above that band would be the structural signal that changes the near-term read. Without that close, the desk treats any tag of 1.3400 as a lower-high attempt into the range cap rather than a breakout. The MACRO MASTERY desk covers CPI live as the print lands, which is where this scenario resolves.
Bear scenario (roughly 45% weight). The higher-for-longer structural bid reasserts. Elevated 10-year yields, sticky CPI, oil still spiking on the Gulf war, all of it pulls DXY back through 101.02 and beyond. Cable rolls off the 1.3400 cap, loses the 1.3300 near-support, and gravitates toward the 1.3150 pivot. That is where the real fight begins because 1.3150 is the June low, the 20-day average, and the level where the entire consolidation thesis lives or dies. A close below 1.3150 opens the 1.3000 round-number floor as the next objective. Remaining 20% is pure range chop into CPI with no directional resolution.
What Would Invalidate This GBP/USD Forecast
A daily close above the 1.3450 mid-1.34s band flips the lower-high structure and forces a reassessment of the dollar-up thesis. On the other side, a clean daily close below the 1.3150 June low breaks the entire consolidation and opens the 1.3000 round. A US CPI print materially below the 3.96% nowcast would remove the higher-for-longer fuel and hit the dollar directly. Any de-escalation headline out of the Gulf that cracks oil would do the same via yields.
The Cross-Asset Confirmation Check
Cable does not trade in isolation. EUR/USD at 1.1410 is doing the same thing, correcting after three up days, capped under the 1.1475 area with 1.1500 above, choppy into CPI. Gold at 4065 has broken below 4100 and is on a second down session, real yields overwhelming the war’s haven bid. That combination, dollar chop but gold weak and yields firm at 4.57%, tells the desk the structural dollar-up trade is intact underneath the noise. It just needs the CPI catalyst to activate. If euro and cable break their range caps together, the fake-out completes and the dollar bears get another session. If gold accelerates lower and yields push toward 4.65%, the pound follows the dollar higher, not the other way around. Same stack a hedge-fund analyst runs every morning, delivered via MACRO MASTERY.
Final Takeaway on the GBP/USD Forecast
Cable at 1.3355 is a range trade dressed as a directional story. The 1.3400 200-day average is the cap. The 1.3150 June low is the pivot. US CPI on 14 July is the switch, and until it flips, the tape is chop with a lower-high risk if the dollar’s structural bid reasserts through oil and yields. Trade the terrain the market is showing, not the story you want it to be.
“The dollar didn’t follow the Fed’s script yesterday. It doesn’t mean the script changed. It means the market wants to see the June CPI print before it commits.”

GBP/USD Forecast FAQ
Where is GBP/USD trading on 9 July 2026?
GBP/USD is trading at 1.3355 as of 08:30 BST on 9 July 2026, inside a 1.325 to 1.345 consolidation range. Cable has recovered from the late-June low near 1.3150 and is capped by the 200-day moving average band at 1.3400. The tape is choppy consolidation into next week’s US CPI print on 14 July, which is the primary resolver.
Why did the dollar fail to rally on the hawkish June FOMC minutes?
The June FOMC minutes were hawkish and higher-for-longer, flagging upside inflation risks from AI investment, tariffs and the Middle East, with a few officials open to another hike. But softer US growth and labour data underneath the print offset the message. DXY opened near 101.11, faded to 100.85, and stayed inside its 100.31 to 101.50 corridor. Markets are waiting for the 14 July CPI catalyst before committing.
What is the key support level for cable this week?
The support that matters is 1.3150, which is both the June low and the 20-day moving average. That confluence is the pivot for the entire consolidation thesis. Above it, the range holds and lower-highs into 1.3400 remain the structural read. Below it on a daily close, the 1.3000 round-number floor becomes the next objective and the dollar-up structural view reasserts.
What is the key resistance level for GBP/USD?
The 1.3400 band is the primary cap, home to the 200-day moving average, one of the most-watched trend filters in FX. Above sits 1.3450, the mid-1.34s chop top and the level a daily close needs to hold above to change the near-term structural read. Rejection at 1.3400 keeps the lower-high risk live into US CPI on 14 July.
How does the Iran-US conflict affect the pound?
The escalation, including a second night of US strikes on 90 Iranian targets and Iranian retaliation on 85 US targets in Bahrain and Kuwait, is pushing oil roughly 10% higher over two sessions. Higher oil rearms the US inflation impulse, which reinforces higher-for-longer Fed rates and keeps the 10-year yield at 4.57%. That is structurally dollar-supportive and a headwind for cable via the yield differential channel.
When does US CPI print and why does it matter for cable?
US June CPI releases on Tuesday 14 July at 8:30am ET, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics schedule. The nowcast is roughly 3.96% year-on-year, versus 4.2% in May. A hot print reinforces higher-for-longer, activates the structural dollar-up trade, and pressures cable toward the 1.3150 support. A softer print removes the fuel behind the dollar bid and opens the 1.3400 cap for a break attempt.
