Today’s GBP/USD forecast puts cable at 1.3367, a two-week high after the June US payrolls miss (+57k versus 110k expected) knocked the dollar. The pair is running straight into the 1.3366 200-day moving average, with 1.3450 the pivot above and the 1.3150 to 1.3170 shelf the objective if this bounce prints a lower high.

Named Levels Worth Watching

RESISTANCE (upside liquidity)

  • 1.3366 ↑ the 200-day moving average, the immediate cap this bounce is testing right now
  • 1.3450 ↑ the mid-1.34s, the pivot for the bigger read; a reclaim and hold flips the structure
  • 1.3500 ↑ the major round-number cap sitting just above the pivot, first real air-pocket resistance

SUPPORT (downside liquidity)

  • 1.3170 ↓ the top of the key support shelf, first liquidity below on a fade
  • 1.3150 ↓ the base of the shelf, the level that arms the next leg down if it goes
  • 1.3000 ↓ the major round-number floor under the whole structure, the line where the trend read gets serious

The Macro Setup Behind the GBP/USD Forecast

Cable did not rally on its own merit yesterday. It rallied because the dollar broke.

June Non Farm Payrolls landed at +57,000 against a consensus near 110,000, the softest print in four months, and the prior months got revised lower (May cut to 129,000, per the BLS release). The reflex was textbook: DXY at 100.80 eased back from its rising moving averages, EUR/USD bounced off the 1.14 area, gold pushed back above the 4,100 neckline, and GBP/USD surged to 1.3367 on the broad dollar sell. Every dollar pair moved at the same time, which tells you this is a dollar-repricing move, not a sterling story.

Here is where the desk parts company with the headline take. The internals of that NFP were not clearly dovish. Unemployment actually FELL to 4.2 percent (yes, on a lower participation rate, but it fell). Average hourly earnings held firm at +0.3 percent on the month and +3.5 percent on the year. Core CPI is still at 2.9 percent, above the Fed’s target. And Warsh’s Fed, which held at 3.50 to 3.75 percent on 17 June with a hike-leaning message, has not blinked yet. What has cracked is the AGGRESSIVE hike pricing that built up post-Warsh: summer-hike odds have repriced from roughly 70 percent toward 50 percent, and July is now a low probability. That is the correction the market is running through cable’s pop, not a confirmed pivot.
The full live read on this repricing lands daily inside the MACRO MASTERY desk.

Cable typically tracks the broad dollar through a data run, and the UK leg stays secondary until the Fed path decides. So the desk treats this GBP/USD pop as mostly a dollar-repricing bounce with the sterling side along for the ride. The decider is June CPI on 14 July, the last major inflation read before the 28-29 July FOMC. A soft print breaks the dollar’s higher-low structure and the current bounce can extend. A hot print revives the hawkish path and this bounce prints as a lower high before the dollar resumes higher. That is the fork.

Multi-Timeframe Read on the GBP/USD Forecast

On the daily, cable has been running through a broad consolidation with the 1.3150 to 1.3170 shelf as the floor and the mid-1.34s as the ceiling. The 200-day at 1.3366 sits inside that range, which is exactly why it matters this morning: it is both a moving-average level AND the front edge of the resistance cluster that caps the whole box. Bounces into this zone have been sold twice in recent weeks; the tape has form here.

Step down to the H4 and the bounce is clean. The move up from the 1.31-handle is impulsive rather than corrective in shape, which is what a dollar-wide repricing looks like from the sterling side. But the wick into 1.3367 on the NFP reaction shows sellers stepping in exactly where the desk would expect them, at the 200-day. That is the tell. The tape is not committing above the average yet, it is testing it.

Intraday, cable is coiling in the low-1.33s. The behaviour to watch is simple: does London price accept above 1.3366 or reject from it? Acceptance opens the run toward 1.3450 mid-1.34s pivot, which is the real decision level. Rejection turns this into a lower-high candidate and 1.3170 to 1.3150 comes back into view. The desk’s caution is that with UK data quiet and the whole move driven by the dollar leg, sterling has no independent bid to force the break. It needs the dollar to keep bleeding, which needs 14 July CPI to cooperate. The desk covers that print live inside MACRO MASTERY as the number lands.

Scenario Map

The bull scenario (dollar-break continues). London accepts above the 1.3366 200-day and cable grinds toward the 1.3450 mid-1.34s pivot through the session. A close back above the average on the daily starts to force the desk to drop the corrective read. In this path, sterling drifts toward the 1.3450 pivot with 1.3500 the round-number cap just above. The confirmation the desk would need is a soft June CPI on 14 July that breaks the dollar’s higher-low structure. Without that, this scenario stalls at 1.3450 and rolls back into range. Cable does not do independent breakouts against a hike-leaning Fed unless the data cooperates.

The bear scenario (lower-high risk). The 1.3366 200-day rejects, London sells the bounce, and cable rolls back toward 1.3170 through the week. A daily close under the 1.3150 shelf base arms the next leg lower, with 1.3000 the round-number floor that would come into view on a hot CPI reviving the hawkish path. This is the desk’s base-case risk, not because sterling is broken, but because the whole rally is one dollar-repricing shock deep. If Warsh’s Fed stays hike-leaning and core CPI stays sticky at 2.9 percent, the dollar finds its footing and the pound gives back the NFP move.

WHAT WOULD INVALIDATE THIS READ

A clean daily close above 1.3450 forces the desk to drop the lower-high framing entirely and treat this as a genuine dollar trend break. Equally, a soft June CPI print on 14 July that snaps the dollar’s higher-low structure would validate the bounce as more than corrective. On the flip side, a hot CPI, a hawkish leak out of Warsh’s Fed, or a rejection candle at the 1.3366 200-day that closes weak on the day would confirm the corrective read and put 1.3170 back on the table quickly.

The Cross-Asset Tell for the GBP/USD Forecast

Cable is not moving alone. EUR/USD bounced off 1.14 to 1.1455 but is still under its 50 and 200-day averages with soft momentum, fighting the 1.15 pivot with a 1.1560 to 1.1600 shelf above. Gold rebounded from an eight-month low and broke back above 4,100 (the double-bottom neckline), pressing toward 4,200 while still 6 percent lower on the month. DXY at 100.80 eased but stayed above its rising moving averages in a buy alignment. Read those together and the picture is coherent: every dollar counterpart bounced, none has confirmed a trend flip, and the dollar itself has only pulled back, not broken.

That matters for the GBP/USD forecast because cable is the most dollar-sensitive of the majors on a data-shock day. If the euro cannot get through 1.15 and gold stalls under 4,200, the odds that sterling powers through the 200-day and the mid-1.34s pivot on its own are low. The desk wants to see corroboration from the euro leg and a fresh crack in DXY before treating this as more than a bounce. Same stack a hedge-fund analyst runs every morning, delivered via MACRO MASTERY.

Final Takeaway

The GBP/USD forecast into the middle of this week rests entirely on whether the 1.3366 200-day rejects or gets reclaimed. Everything else is noise until London tells us which side of that average cable wants to price. The bigger structural read (firm US wages, low unemployment, sticky core CPI, a hike-leaning Warsh Fed) still leans the dollar’s way, so the desk treats this bounce as corrective until 14 July June CPI proves otherwise. Respect the pop, but do not extrapolate it.

“A bounce that starts at the shelf and ends at the 200-day is not a trend, it is a mean reversion with a name. CPI decides if it becomes anything else.”

GBP/USD Forecast FAQ

Why did GBP/USD rally on 2 July 2026?

Cable rallied to 1.3367 because the June US Non Farm Payrolls print landed soft at +57,000 versus consensus near 110,000, with prior months revised down. That knocked the dollar broadly and repriced aggressive Fed hike bets lower, from roughly 70 percent toward 50 percent for a summer hike. Every dollar pair bounced simultaneously, which flags this as a dollar-repricing move rather than a sterling-specific rally.

What is the key resistance on GBP/USD right now?

The immediate cap is 1.3366, the 200-day moving average, and cable is testing it directly on this bounce. Above that sits 1.3450, the mid-1.34s pivot that decides the bigger read. A daily close above 1.3450 would force the desk to drop the corrective framing. The 1.3500 round number sits just beyond as the first real air-pocket resistance above the pivot.

Where is support on GBP/USD if the bounce fails?

The first support is 1.3170, the top of the key demand shelf. Below that, 1.3150 is the shelf base and the level that arms the next leg down. Under 1.3150 sits the major 1.3000 round-number floor, which is the line where the trend read gets serious. Those are the levels a lower-high scenario would target if the 200-day rejects and the dollar finds its footing.

What does the June CPI print mean for GBP/USD?

June US CPI on 14 July is the last major inflation read before the 28-29 July FOMC and it is the decider for cable direction. A soft print would break the dollar’s higher-low structure and extend the current pound bounce. A hot print would revive the Fed’s hawkish path, turn the current bounce into a lower high, and put 1.3170 and 1.3000 back into view. The pair is essentially in a holding pattern until then.

Is the Fed still expected to hike in 2026?

Kevin Warsh’s Fed held the target range at 3.50 to 3.75 percent on 17 June with a hike-leaning message. After the soft June payrolls, summer-hike odds repriced from around 70 percent toward 50 percent and a July hike is now a low probability. But wages are still firm, unemployment fell to 4.2 percent, and core CPI is at 2.9 percent, so the hawkish path is trimmed rather than cancelled. CPI on 14 July decides.

Why does the 200-day moving average matter for cable?

The 200-day at 1.3366 matters because it doubles as both a widely watched moving-average level AND the front edge of the resistance cluster that caps the current daily range. Institutional desks use it as a directional benchmark, and cable has been rejected in this zone twice in recent weeks. The tape has form here, so the market treats acceptance or rejection at 1.3366 as a real information signal rather than noise.
