US Dollar Forecast: DXY Hits a 14-Month High as July Hike Bets Reach 37.6%

The dollar is doing exactly what the rate market is telling it to do. The US dollar index (DXY) has climbed for a fourth straight session to around 101.3, its highest level since April last year, as traders keep repricing the odds of another Federal Reserve hike. This is not a mystery move. It is the front end of the curve pulling the dollar higher, and the desk has been mapping this for a while.
The engine: a 37.6% chance of a July hike
Here is the number that matters. As of 24 June, CME 30-day fed funds futures put the probability of a hike at the 29 July FOMC at 37.6%, against a 62.4% chance of a hold. The Fed left the target range at 3.50% to 3.75% on 17 June, but the recent run of firmer inflation data plus hawkish comments from policymakers has pushed a July move back onto the table. A month ago that probability was a rounding error. Now it is better than one in three, and it is the single cleanest reason the dollar is bid.
The data that decides where this goes next is stacked up right in front of us:
- Core PCE, Thursday 25 June, 13:30 UK time. This is the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge. A hot print feeds the hike story and the dollar.
- US non-farm payrolls, Thursday 2 July. A firm labour market keeps the Fed’s hand free.
- US CPI, Tuesday 14 July. The last word on inflation before the 29 July decision.
The last couple of inflation readings have leaned hot. If that continues, the path of least resistance for the dollar is higher, because the market keeps having to add hike risk rather than take it away.
The desk read
When the dollar is firmly bid like this, it sets the tone for the whole board. It is grinding the major pairs lower and leaning on gold. The point for a trader is not to fight it. It is to know the dollar is the driver, read its direction first, and take setups with the wind behind them rather than against them. Until the data turns the hike story off, dips in the dollar have been bought, not sold.
