GBP/USD Price Analysis: Cable Loses 1.3400 as a Hot NFP Powers the Dollar (8 June 2026)
By Ken Chigbo, founder of KenMacro, 2026-06-08. GBP/USD price analysis with the desk’s read on the tape. Educational only, not financial advice.
GBP/USD is trading around 1.3305 after the hot US jobs print ripped the dollar higher and broke the key 1.3400 support that had held all week. The double bottom failed, old support is now resistance, and the path of least resistance points down toward 1.3250 and 1.3200 while price stays capped below 1.3400. This is a dollar story, not a pound story: higher-for-longer is entrenched and the rate differential is moving against cable.
Setup
CABLE LOSES 1.3400. THE FLOOR GAVE WAY.
Friday’s hot Non-Farm Payrolls lit the dollar on fire and the pound paid for it. The 1.3400 liquidity that was holding with double-bottom signs snapped, the double bottom failed, and sellers pressed straight into the void. Cable now sits near 1.3305 with the old floor flipped to resistance above.
Where GBP/USD sits right now
Price sits near 1.3305 intraday, well below the line in the sand. Through last week the floor at 1.3400 held twice and put in what looked like a double bottom, the kind of structure buyers lean on. Friday’s payrolls beat ended that argument. The hot print sent yields and the dollar higher, the bid under cable vanished, and 1.3400 broke on volume. A clean support break flips the level: what was the floor is now the ceiling, with 1.3400 as the first wall and 1.3475 above it as the deeper resistance shelf. Below current spot the desk is watching 1.3250 as the next magnet, then 1.3200 if momentum carries. The character has turned bearish and continuation-led: lower highs into a broken support, sellers in control while we trade under 1.3400. The honest caveat is that breaks this sharp often get a retest, so a bounce back up to kiss 1.3400 from below would be normal price action rather than a reversal, and only a daily close back above that level would start to repair the damage.

What is driving the tape
The dollar is the whole story here. Friday’s Non-Farm Payrolls came in hot, a clear upside beat on jobs that ran well above the recent moderate pace, with wage growth staying sticky. That single print did the heavy lifting: it pushed the market to ramp rate-hike pricing, lifted the front end of the curve, and gave the dollar the fuel to break out. Cable is simply the other side of that trade.
Higher-for-longer is now entrenched. CME FedWatch hike odds jumped, US 2y and 10y yields pushed higher, and real yields climbed with them. That is the cleanest tailwind a currency can have, and it is blowing the wrong way for the pound. The UK rate path has not changed, but the US path has, and the differential is widening against cable as the Fed leans hawkish.
Kevin Warsh chairs the Fed now, and this was his first payrolls report in the seat. He carries a hawkish reputation, and the data handed him cover to keep the higher-for-longer message intact. The next real test is the FOMC on 16 to 17 June, next week, which is the catalyst that can either confirm this dollar breakout or take some air out of it.
The geopolitics are reinforcing, not offsetting. The Israel-Iran war escalated over the weekend, which is both inflationary through the energy channel and net dollar-supportive through the safe-haven bid. For a risk-sensitive pair like cable that leans on global risk appetite, that backdrop adds a second weight on top of the rate story.
The trade the desk is watching
- Bias is bearish while GBP/USD trades below 1.3400. The desk is selling rallies, not buying the dip, until the structure says otherwise.
- The clean idea is to fade a bounce back into 1.3400, the broken support now acting as resistance. That retest, if it comes, is where sellers are likely to reload.
- First downside target is 1.3250, then 1.3200 if momentum carries. Bank into those levels rather than holding for a moonshot.
- Invalidation is a daily close back above 1.3400. That repairs the break, puts 1.3475 back in play, and the short thesis is off.
- Size with FOMC 16 to 17 June in mind. The move is sharp and a snap-back retest is normal, so do not over-commit into a one-way story a week before a central-bank catalyst.

What would break the trade
- A daily close back above 1.3400 repairs the breakdown, flips old support back to support, and opens a squeeze toward 1.3475.
- A soft FOMC next week, or any dovish wobble from Warsh, could take the legs out of the dollar breakout and let cable retrace hard.
- A de-escalation headline out of the Israel-Iran conflict would pull the safe-haven bid out of the dollar and unwind part of the move.
- Stronger UK data or a hawkish Bank of England surprise would narrow the differential and give the pound a reason to fight back off 1.3250.

Frequently asked questions
Why is GBP/USD falling today?
It is a dollar move, not a pound move. Friday’s hot US Non-Farm Payrolls ramped rate-hike pricing and lifted yields, which sent the dollar breaking out. Cable is the other side of that trade, so it dropped through 1.3400 and is now near 1.3305.
What does the 1.3400 break mean for cable?
1.3400 was the support that held all week with double-bottom signs, and it broke on the hot print. A clean support break flips the level, so 1.3400 is now resistance and the next downside magnets are 1.3250 and 1.3200. The bias stays bearish while price holds below it.
Could GBP/USD bounce from here?
Yes, and a bounce would be normal. Breaks this sharp often get a retest, so a move back up to kiss 1.3400 from below is standard price action rather than a reversal. Only a daily close back above 1.3400 would actually repair the breakdown and invalidate the short.
What is the next catalyst for the pound?
The FOMC meeting on 16 to 17 June, next week, is the big one. It can either confirm the higher-for-longer dollar breakout or take some air out of it. UK data and any Bank of England signal matter too, but right now the US rate path is driving cable.
