GBP/USD Price Analysis: Cable Bouncing Off 1.3400, Double-Bottom Signs Into NFP (5 June 2026)

By Ken Chigbo, founder of KenMacro, 2026-06-05. GBP/USD price analysis with the desk’s read on the tape. Educational only, not financial advice.

Cable is showing buying pressure off a very key area of liquidity. GBP/USD has held 1.3400 and is bouncing, with early signs of a double bottom forming at the level. As with the euro, this is an NFP-day bounce, so it only extends if the US jobs report is soft enough to ease the dollar off the 99.50 barrier. A bullish payrolls print pulls cable back toward 1.3400. The pound is trading the dollar leg today, and the whole picture sits under the US, Iran escalation.

Setup

CABLE BOUNCING OFF 1.3400, DOUBLE-BOTTOM SIGNS, NFP IS THE TRIGGER.

Sterling is showing buying pressure off the very key 1.3400 liquidity, with double-bottom signs building. Like the euro, the bounce lives or dies on today’s US jobs print: a soft dollar number extends it, a hot one drags cable back to 1.3400. US, Iran sits over the top.

Where GBP/USD sits right now

Sterling has bounced off the 1.3400 liquidity, a level the desk has flagged as very key, and is pressing higher with buyers showing up at the floor. Two defences of that area are what give it the double-bottom look. The pound has been the slightly firmer of the two majors against the dollar through this stretch, so a bounce here is consistent with its relative strength, but it is still a bounce inside a range until it proves otherwise. Overhead, 1.3500 is the first hurdle and then 1.3540 is the range resistance. Hold 1.3400 and clear 1.3500 and the double bottom builds, lose 1.3400 on a strong dollar print and the floor is gone.

What is driving the tape

Driving cable today is the US jobs report, not anything domestic. The pair is trading the dollar side, so a soft or lacklustre payrolls number, one that keeps the dollar capped under 99.50, is what the sterling bounce needs to push on. A bullish US print flips the read, the dollar bids and the pound gets dragged back down to test 1.3400.

Clean is the word for the setup, because the level is clean. 1.3400 is a very key area of liquidity, buyers have defended it, and that is the double bottom in progress. It gives a defined line to trade against: the bounce is valid above it and in trouble below it. The buying pressure has the edge for now, but it is data-contingent, and the desk treats the double bottom as a setup waiting on confirmation rather than a done deal.

Over the top of it is the same driver weighing on every risk asset, US, Iran. There is still no agreement, the situation has escalated with the Lebanon front alongside it, and Trump has signalled no rush. The pound is a risk-sensitive currency, so a genuine risk-off shock, the kind that comes if strikes move to civilian infrastructure, would pull cable lower whatever the jobs data says. That is the weekend risk to carry into the close.

The trade the desk is watching

  • The level is 1.3400, the very key liquidity and the double-bottom base. The bounce is valid while it holds.
  • Bull case: a soft NFP eases the dollar, cable clears 1.3500 and the double bottom builds toward 1.3540, the range top.
  • Bear case: a bullish US jobs print lifts the dollar through 99.50, the bounce fails and 1.3400 is retested, a break there opens the downside.
  • Data first. The desk reads cable’s reaction to NFP at 1.3400 and 1.3500 before committing, rather than front-running the number.
  • Carry the weekend tail: a US, Iran risk-off escalation hits the pound as a risk currency regardless of the data.

What would break the trade

  • A clean break and hold above 1.3500: the double bottom confirms and cable targets 1.3540 and the range top.
  • A bullish NFP and a dollar break of 99.50: the bounce fails and 1.3400 is retested.
  • A daily close back below 1.3400: the double bottom is invalidated and the down structure resumes.
  • A geopolitical risk-off shock: sterling sells with the rest of the risk complex, independent of the jobs print.

Frequently asked questions

Is GBP/USD turning bullish?

Short term it is showing buying pressure off the 1.3400 liquidity, with signs of a double bottom forming. It is constructive but unconfirmed. The bounce needs a soft US jobs report today to keep the dollar capped under 99.50 and let cable clear 1.3500. A strong dollar print would put 1.3400 back in play.

Why is 1.3400 the key level for cable?

It is a very key area of liquidity that buyers have now defended more than once, which is what gives the double-bottom look. It is the clean line to trade against: the bounce is valid above it, and a daily close below it invalidates the double bottom and reopens the downside.

What decides cable’s direction today?

The US jobs report. The pound is trading the dollar leg of the pair, so a soft or lacklustre NFP supports the bounce and a bullish one threatens a retest of 1.3400. Beyond the data, the US, Iran situation is the overriding risk.

How does the Middle East escalation affect the pound?

Sterling is a risk-sensitive currency, so a serious risk-off move, if US, Iran escalates to civilian targets rather than just military bases, would weigh on cable regardless of the jobs data. With no deal and escalation continuing into the weekend, it is a tail risk to respect.
