GBP/USD Forecast: Cable Grinds Toward 1.3200 With 1.3000 in Its Sights

Cable is heavy and grinding. GBP/USD is trading around 1.3240, inside today’s 1.3184 to 1.3274 range, and the desk is watching it work down toward the 1.3200 shelf. The dollar is taking a breather today, which is keeping the pound’s losses orderly rather than violent, but the path of least resistance is still lower while the greenback holds the high ground.
The macro: a resting dollar, not a weak one
The dollar index tagged a 13-month high of 101.80 on Wednesday, the May 2025 peak and the top of the 52-week range, before easing back toward 101.5 on a bit of profit-taking ahead of data. That is healthy, not bearish: a strong trend pulls back into a higher low and then looks to continue. As long as the Dixie holds that structure under 101.80, every grind in cable is more likely to extend than to reverse.
Today is the test. US core PCE, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, is out at 13:30 UK time (08:30 ET). Consensus is for headline PCE at 4.1% year on year, the hottest since April 2023 and largely energy-driven, with core steady at 3.3% and 0.37% on the month. With the Fed on hold at 3.50% to 3.75% and CME pricing a 37.4% chance of a July hike versus 62.6% for a hold, a firm print keeps the dollar supported and cable on the back foot. The data does not stop there: US payrolls land on 2 July and CPI on 14 July into the 29 July FOMC, so the dollar side of this pair stays live for two more weeks.
The pound has its own soft underbelly too, with UK political and growth questions keeping sterling from mounting any real counter-attack. Put a firm dollar on top of a soft pound and you get a pair that grinds rather than snaps.
Levels: the road to 1.3000
| Direction | Level | Why it matters (confluence) |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | ~1.3240 | Inside today’s 1.3184-1.3274 range, grinding lower |
| Support | 1.3200 | First resistance-turned-support shelf the desk is tracking |
| Support | 1.3150 | Next step down if 1.3200 gives way; into the lower band of the recent range |
| Support / target | 1.3000 | Next major area of liquidity, 130 on the nose, the clean downside magnet |
| What invalidates it | Reclaim and hold above ~1.3300 | Would relieve the pressure and put cable back in balance |

How the desk reads it
The base case is a steady grind: through 1.3200, into 1.3150, and ultimately toward the big 1.3000 liquidity if the dollar trend resumes after its rest. But keep the other side honest. Cable is already down on the month and the dollar is the one that is stretched, so an in-line or soft core PCE could let the market pare July hike bets and give the pound a relief pop. A steadier read on the UK backdrop would do the same. The structure stays bearish while price is capped under roughly 1.3300; a daily close back above there is the tell that the grind is on pause. This is the desk read, cross-referenced across multiple live sources and stripped of the noise.
What changed since the last update
GBP/USD is grinding toward the 1.3200 shelf with 1.3150 and then the major 1.3000 liquidity in its sights, held down by a dollar that tagged a 13-month high at 101.80 and a soft pound, with core PCE today the next catalyst.

FAQ
Why is the pound falling against the dollar in June 2026? GBP/USD is grinding lower because the US dollar is holding near a 13-month high on a 37.4% chance of a July Fed hike, while a soft UK backdrop keeps the pound from staging any real recovery.
What is the next target for GBP/USD? The desk is watching the 1.3200 shelf, then 1.3150, with the next major area of liquidity at 1.3000 if those levels give way. A reclaim of about 1.3300 would relieve the pressure.
What could lift cable? An in-line or soft US core PCE that eases July Fed hike pricing, or a steadier UK political and growth picture, would give the pound room for a relief bounce.
