The short answer
The best time to trade gold is the London and New York overlap, roughly 1pm to 4pm UK time, when both major sessions are open at once and gold gets its deepest liquidity and cleanest trends. The New York morning around the US data releases is the second window. Gold can move any hour because it trades nearly around the clock, but the overlap is where the volume, the volatility and the follow-through line up, and the late Asian afternoon is usually the slowest stretch to avoid.
Why the overlap wins
Gold trades almost around the clock, but liquidity is not spread evenly across those hours. When London is open in the afternoon and New York comes online in its morning, you have the two deepest pools of money active at the same time. That overlap, roughly 1pm to 4pm UK time, is where gold gets tight spreads, real volume and moves that actually continue rather than chop and reverse. If you only have a couple of hours a day to trade gold, this is the window to pick. More participants means cleaner structure, and cleaner structure is what your stops and targets rely on.
How each session behaves
Asia, overnight UK time, tends to be quieter and more range-bound for gold, with the occasional sharp move on Chinese or geopolitical headlines. London, from early UK morning, brings the first real wave of volume and often sets the day’s direction. New York, from early afternoon UK time, is where the US data and the dollar do their work on gold, and the overlap with a still-open London is the high point. By the New York afternoon, after London closes, moves can get thinner and more prone to fakeouts. Knowing the personality of each session stops you trading a range like a trend.
Which broker for this
You cannot trade any of this without a broker that fits how you actually trade. The desk’s stack, by what you need most.
The news windows that drive gold
Gold is a macro instrument, so its biggest moves cluster around scheduled US data, not random hours. The CPI inflation print, the jobs report, and the Fed decision and press conference are the three that matter most, and they almost all land in the New York morning, UK afternoon. Real yields and the dollar are the transmission, when they fall, gold usually lifts, and these releases are where they reprice fastest. Mark those release times on your calendar and decide in advance whether you are trading the run-in, standing aside for the spike, or waiting for the dust to settle. Walking into a CPI print with no plan is how good setups turn into blown stops.
The hours to leave alone
Not every hour is worth your attention, and pretending otherwise is how traders overtrade. The late Asian session and the gap between New York close and London open are usually thin, with wider spreads and choppier price, the kind of conditions that punish tight stops. The first few minutes around a major release can also be a trap, the spread blows out and price whips both ways before it picks a side. Discipline about when not to trade gold protects more capital than any entry trick. If the volume is not there, the edge is not there.
The desk’s view on timing gold
Timing the session is necessary but it is not the trade. The overlap tells you when liquidity is best, it does not tell you which way gold should go, and that is the part that pays. The desk lines up the macro picture first, real yields, the dollar, the risk tone, and then uses the overlap to execute the read with the cleanest fills. Session timing without a directional thesis is just trading the most liquid hours of a coin flip. Get the macro lean right, then let the best window give you the entry. That order matters far more than the clock on its own.
The desk’s checklist
- Build your day around the overlap. Plan your main gold trading for roughly 1pm to 4pm UK time, when London and New York are both open and liquidity peaks.
- Mark the US data times. Put CPI, the jobs report and the Fed decision on your calendar. These drive gold and nearly all land in the UK afternoon.
- Set your directional read before the session. Decide your gold bias from real yields and the dollar before the window opens, so you are executing a plan, not reacting.
- Avoid the thin hours. Stand down through the late Asian lull and the New York to London gap, where spreads widen and price chops.
- Respect the first minutes of a release. Let the spread settle after a major print rather than chasing the first spike, which often reverses before it trends.
Frequently asked
What is the best time to trade gold?
The London and New York overlap, roughly 1pm to 4pm UK time, when both sessions are open and gold has its deepest liquidity and cleanest trends. The New York morning around US data is the second-best window.
Can you trade gold 24 hours a day?
Gold trades nearly around the clock across the global sessions, but the hours are not equal. Most of the tradable volume and follow-through sits in the London and New York hours, while the late Asian session is usually the quietest.
What news moves gold the most?
US inflation (CPI), the jobs report and the Fed decision, because they reprice real yields and the dollar, which are gold’s main drivers. They almost all land in the New York morning, UK afternoon.
Is it worth trading gold during the Asian session?
It can be quieter and more range-bound, with occasional sharp moves on Asian or geopolitical headlines. If you want trend and liquidity, the London and New York hours are the stronger choice.
What is the worst time to trade gold?
The late Asian lull and the gap between New York close and London open, when spreads widen and price chops. The first minute of a major data release is also best left to settle before you act.
