Broker Reviews, the desk’s verdict

By Ken Chigbo, founder and macro trader, KenMacro. Updated 2026-06-04.

The desk’s verdict

As of June 2026, for running EAs on MT4 and MT5 I rate VT Markets alongside our desk, Blueberry Markets as the best all-round algo broker, and Star Trader for low-entry high-leverage automation, because all three give full EA support, raw spreads and execution that does not punish an automated strategy.

The short answer

For EA and algo trading I look for full Expert Advisor support on MT4 or MT5, raw spreads, fast execution and a broker that allows automated trading with VPS for 24/5 uptime. VT Markets, Blueberry Markets and Star Trader all meet that. Pick on cost, regulation and your strategy type, not on backtest promises.

Not a faceless list

This is not a comparison site that has never placed a trade. The desk trades these brokers live and posts the wins and the losses in the open, so you can see exactly what we are recommending and why. Judge it on the trades, not on our word.

VT Markets

Open VT →

VT Markets is the broker our desk actually uses, regulated by ASIC and FSCA, with full EA support on both MT4 and MT5. You get raw spreads, fast execution and automated trading is allowed, which is exactly what an EA needs to keep a tested edge alive. It is multi-asset, so the same account covers an EA on FX and an EA on indices or metals. One caveat, no UK accounts. If you want to run your automation next to where my desk runs its own, this is the one I point to first.

Best all-round EA/algo broker (editor’s choice)

Blueberry Markets

Open Blueberry →

Blueberry Markets is my editor’s choice for algo trading because it covers every base. ASIC regulated under AFSL 535887, full EA support on MT4 and MT5, plus cTrader if you build cBots instead. Raw spreads and fast execution keep cost-sensitive strategies honest, and automated trading is welcome. If you are not tied to our desk’s broker and want the cleanest all-round home for an EA or an algo across platforms, this is the one I send most people to.

Best low-entry / high-leverage for EAs

Star Trader

Open Star →

Star Trader is the offshore pick for traders who want to start small. Around fifty dollars to open, leverage up to 1:1000, and EA support on MT4 and MT5. That makes it the easy choice for testing an automated strategy live without committing much capital. Be clear-eyed though. Offshore means lighter regulation, and 1:1000 leverage will magnify a bad EA as fast as a good one. Use it to prove a system small, with strict risk, not to swing for size you cannot afford.

What an EA actually is

An EA, or Expert Advisor, is an automated program that runs inside MT4 or MT5 and trades a strategy for you without you sitting at the screen. You load it onto a chart, it reads the price feed against its rules, and it opens, manages and closes trades on its own. cTrader has the same idea under a different name, cBots. The key point is simple. An EA is only as good as the strategy coded into it, and it executes that strategy through your broker. So the broker is not a side detail. It is part of the engine.

Why the broker matters so much for an EA

An EA fires orders fast and often, and it has no judgement about a bad fill. That makes broker conditions load-bearing. Execution speed decides whether your EA gets the price it expected or a slipped one. Spreads matter more than for a manual trader because an EA may take many trades a day, so a wide spread quietly bleeds the edge out of a strategy that tested well on tight costs. Slippage on entries and stops can flip a profitable backtest into a losing live run. The broker must also actually allow automated trading and high frequency entries, because some restrict or throttle it. And because an EA needs to run 24 hours a day during the week, you want a VPS, a remote server that keeps the EA live even when your own machine is off. I look at all of this before I look at any award.

How we get paid (straight up)

Yes, the desk earns a commission if you fund through the broker links on this page, at no extra cost to you. The difference between this and most best broker lists is simple: a real macro desk stands behind it, trades these brokers with real money, and shows you the results. The incentive is visible because the trades are public. We do not ask you to trust us blindly, we show you the trades.

The blunt truth about EAs before you fund anything

I run a real desk and I post my trades publicly, so I will not sell you a fantasy. A backtested EA is not a guaranteed profit. Backtests are run on clean historical data with perfect fills, and live markets do not work like that. Most retail EAs fail when they go live, either because they were curve-fitted to the past or because the strategy never had a real edge. Broker conditions change an EA’s results too. The same EA on a wider spread or a slower feed can lose where it backtested green. And you must understand the strategy the EA is running. If you cannot explain in plain words what it does and why it should make money, you are not investing, you are gambling on someone else’s code. Choose the broker for sound reasons, then prove the EA on a small live account before you trust it with size.

How I picked these brokers

Three filters. First, full EA support on MT4 or MT5, with no platform fudge that breaks automation. Second, raw spreads and fast execution, because cost and fills are what kill or carry an automated strategy. Third, the broker has to allow automated and high frequency trading openly and offer or support a VPS so the EA can run 24/5. Regulation is the backstop on all of it. Below are the three I am comfortable naming as of June 2026.

Honest money disclosure

These are affiliate links. If you open an account through them the broker may pay the desk a commission, at no extra cost to you. That does not buy a place on this page. I only list brokers I would route an EA through myself, and the desk runs its own capital with VT Markets. Trading is high risk and most retail accounts lose money, including with automated systems. Nothing here is personal advice.

Frequently asked

What is the best forex broker for EA trading?

There is no single best for everyone. For running EAs I rate VT Markets alongside our desk, Blueberry Markets as the best all-round algo broker, and Star Trader for low-entry high-leverage. All three give full EA support on MT4 or MT5, raw spreads and execution that suits automation. Pick on cost, regulation and your strategy, not on backtest claims.

Will an EA make me money automatically?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. A backtested EA is not a guaranteed profit. Most retail EAs fail live because they were fitted to the past or never had a real edge. The broker, the spread and live conditions all change the result. Prove any EA small on a live account first and only trust it with size once it holds up.

Why do spreads matter more for an EA?

An EA can take many trades a day, so spread cost compounds fast. A strategy that tested profitable on tight raw spreads can turn into a loser on a wider one because the cost eats the edge. That is why I only list raw spread accounts for EAs. Always check live spreads on the pairs your EA trades, not just the headline number.

Do I need a VPS to run an EA?

If you want the EA running 24 hours a day during the trading week, yes. A VPS is a remote server that keeps your EA live even when your own computer is off or your internet drops. Without one, the EA stops the moment your machine does, which can leave trades unmanaged. The brokers here support or offer VPS options.

Do these brokers allow automated and high-frequency trading?

Yes. VT Markets, Blueberry Markets and Star Trader all allow automated trading via EAs, which is why they are on this page. Some brokers restrict or throttle high-frequency automation, so always confirm the current terms before you fund an account, since broker conditions can change.

Can I run EAs on MT4 and MT5?

Yes. All three brokers here give full EA support on MT4 and MT5. Blueberry Markets also offers cTrader if you prefer to build cBots. MT5 is generally the more modern platform, but plenty of strong EAs are written for MT4, so use whichever your strategy is coded for.

Is high leverage good for EA trading?

Be careful. Star Trader offers up to 1:1000, which sounds attractive, but leverage magnifies a losing EA exactly as fast as a winning one. High leverage does not improve a strategy, it only raises the stakes on every trade. Size your risk per trade conservatively and treat big leverage as a tool to be respected, not a shortcut to returns.

Should I buy an EA I do not understand?

No. If you cannot explain in plain words what the EA does and why it should make money, you are gambling on someone else’s code. Understand the strategy, the conditions it needs and how it behaves in a drawdown before you risk real capital. A good broker cannot save a strategy you do not understand.

General market education only, not financial advice. KenMacro earns a commission if you open an account through the broker links above, at no cost to you. Trading is leveraged and most retail accounts lose money. Spreads, terms and regulation can change, check the broker’s current terms before funding.
