Broker Reviews, the desk’s verdict

By Ken Chigbo, founder and macro trader, KenMacro. Updated 2026-06-04.

The desk’s verdict

As of June 2026, for true ECN-style execution the desk runs VT Markets, rates Blueberry Markets (cTrader, raw spreads) as the all-round editor’s choice, and points low-balance traders to Star Trader.

The short answer

An ECN broker routes your order to a network of liquidity providers instead of taking the other side. You pay raw spreads plus a separate commission rather than a marked-up spread. The desk uses VT Markets, rates Blueberry Markets best all-round, and lists Star Trader as the cheapest entry. Compare all-in cost.

Not a faceless list

This is not a comparison site that has never placed a trade. The desk trades these brokers live and posts the wins and the losses in the open, so you can see exactly what we are recommending and why. Judge it on the trades, not on our word.

VT Markets

Open VT →

This is the broker the desk trades through. Raw-spread, ECN-style accounts with fast execution, regulated by ASIC and FSCA, and a multi-asset offering across MT4, MT5 and TradingView. Low minimum to get started and an Islamic account is available. One hard limit: no UK clients. If you are outside the UK and want the same setup the desk runs, this is my first pick.

Best all-round ECN/raw (editor’s choice)

Blueberry Markets

Open Blueberry →

My all-round pick. Regulated by ASIC under AFSL 535887, raw spreads, fast execution and responsive support. The reason it wins on execution is platform: alongside MT4, MT5 and TradingView, Blueberry offers cTrader, which is genuinely ECN-friendly with depth of market and clean order routing. If you want a true-ECN feel and a broker that is easy to deal with, start here.

Best low-entry option

Star Trader

Open Star →

The cheapest way in. Offshore, with raw-style accounts, leverage up to 1:1000 and a minimum of roughly 50 dollars on MT4 and MT5. The trade-off is real: offshore regulation means weaker protection than ASIC or FSCA, and high leverage is a fast way to blow up if you are not disciplined. If you are testing with a small balance and you understand the risk, it does the job. It is not where I would park serious money.

What ECN means

ECN stands for Electronic Communication Network. Instead of your broker pricing the trade and taking the other side of it, your order is passed into a network of liquidity providers, the banks and funds quoting the real market. Two things follow from that. First, you get raw spreads, often close to zero on the majors, because you are seeing the actual market price rather than a marked-up one. Second, the broker charges a separate, visible commission per lot instead of hiding its fee inside a wider spread. That is the whole idea: a transparent split between the market price and the broker’s fee. A true ECN setup is no dealing desk, meaning there is no broker sitting in the middle deciding whether to fill you or quote against you.

Why active and scalp traders prefer ECN

If you trade often, your cost per trade is the thing that quietly eats your account. Raw spreads plus a fixed commission usually give you a tighter true cost on the majors than a marked-up spread does, and because the order goes to a liquidity network rather than a dealing desk, there is no conflict of interest and far less chance of requotes or your fill being held back when price moves your way. For scalpers and intraday traders that matters on every entry and exit. I trade live, so I feel the difference between a clean fill and a held one. It does not turn a bad strategy good, but it stops the broker model from working against you while you are trying to work.

How we get paid (straight up)

Yes, the desk earns a commission if you fund through the broker links on this page, at no extra cost to you. The difference between this and most best broker lists is simple: a real macro desk stands behind it, trades these brokers with real money, and shows you the results. The incentive is visible because the trades are public. We do not ask you to trust us blindly, we show you the trades.

The honest cost note: raw plus commission vs zero commission

Do not assume zero commission means cheaper. A zero-commission account just buries the fee in a wider spread, so you are still paying, you simply cannot see it. For an active trader, raw spread plus a transparent commission is often the lower all-in cost, but you have to actually do the maths. Add the commission to the spread in pips and compare that total against the marked-up spread on the same pair at the same time of day. Sometimes raw plus commission wins, sometimes it does not. The point of ECN is that the cost is visible, not that it is automatically lower. Compare the all-in number before you decide.

How the desk picks an ECN broker

I look at the execution model first, then the all-in cost, then platform and regulation. A true ECN or raw-spread account, fast fills, a commission you can see, and a regulator with teeth. Platform matters too: cTrader is built for ECN-style order flow and depth of market, while MT4 and MT5 are fine on raw accounts if you prefer them. After that it comes down to who actually fits your situation, your balance, your country, and whether you need an Islamic account.

Honest disclosure and our public trades

Straight up: the broker links on this page are CPA affiliate links. If you open and fund an account, the broker pays the desk a one-off fee. It does not change your spread, your commission, or your fill, and it does not change what I recommend. I run a live macro desk and I post the wins and the losses, not a curated highlight reel. VT Markets is the broker the desk actually trades through. Blueberry is my all-round editor’s choice. Pick the one that fits you, not the one with the loudest banner.

Frequently asked

What is an ECN broker?

An ECN broker uses an Electronic Communication Network to pass your order to a pool of liquidity providers rather than taking the other side itself. You get raw spreads close to the real market price plus a separate, visible commission, with no dealing desk pricing against you.

Is ECN raw plus commission cheaper than zero commission?

Often, for active traders, but not always. A zero-commission account hides its fee in a wider spread, so you still pay. Add the commission to the raw spread in pips and compare that all-in total against the marked-up spread on the same pair before you decide.

Which ECN broker does the desk use?

VT Markets. It runs raw-spread, ECN-style accounts on MT4, MT5 and TradingView, is regulated by ASIC and FSCA, has a low minimum and offers an Islamic account. The one catch is that it does not accept UK clients.

What is the best ECN platform?

cTrader is purpose-built for ECN-style trading, with depth of market and clean order routing, which is why Blueberry Markets offering it is a plus. That said, MT4 and MT5 work perfectly well on raw-spread accounts if you already prefer them.

Is a true ECN broker better for scalping?

Usually yes. Tight raw spreads, fast fills and no dealing desk taking the other side mean lower true cost per trade and less chance of requotes, which matters on every entry and exit when you trade frequently. Always check the commission, since that is your real cost on a raw account.

Are ECN brokers safe?

Safety comes from regulation, not the ECN label. VT Markets (ASIC, FSCA) and Blueberry Markets (ASIC, AFSL 535887) sit under regulators with real teeth. Star Trader is offshore, which means weaker protection, so size your risk accordingly and never fund more than you can afford to lose.

What is the minimum to open an ECN-style account?

It varies by broker. VT Markets has a low minimum to get started, and Star Trader takes roughly 50 dollars. Check the broker’s current account page before funding, as minimums and account types can change.

Do the broker links on this page cost me anything?

No. They are CPA affiliate links, so the broker pays the desk a one-off fee if you open and fund an account. It does not change your spread, commission or fill, and it does not change what I recommend. The desk trades VT Markets and posts both wins and losses publicly.

General market education only, not financial advice. KenMacro earns a commission if you open an account through the broker links above, at no cost to you. Trading is leveraged and most retail accounts lose money. Spreads, terms and regulation can change, check the broker’s current terms before funding.
