Gold Price Forecast: XAU/USD Bounces in the $4,000-$3,900 Zone but Stays Vulnerable

Last checked: 25 June 2026, 09:30 UK time. Educational only, not financial advice. Trading is leveraged and most retail accounts lose money.

Gold is in the thick of a key area of liquidity. XAU/USD broke below $4,000 on Wednesday, a drop of more than 3% to its lowest level in roughly eight months, and is now getting a small technical bounce inside the $4,000 to $3,900 band. Take the bounce for what it is: relief inside a zone that is being actively sold, not a bottom. While it stays heavy here, the metal remains vulnerable to a deeper flush.

The macro: rates and the dollar are doing the damage

This is a rates and dollar story first. The dollar index tagged a 13-month high of 101.80 on Wednesday before easing on profit-taking, and CME is pricing a 37.4% chance of a Federal Reserve hike on 29 July with the Fed on hold at 3.50% to 3.75%. Higher-for-longer policy lifts real yields, and gold pays no yield, so when the return on cash rises the cost of holding bullion rises with it and gold softens. The metal’s small bounce today is riding the dollar’s pause, the same profit-taking that is lifting EUR and steadying cable. If the dollar carves a higher low and pushes back toward 101.80 and beyond, that prop is gone.

Today is the swing factor. US core PCE, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, lands at 13:30 UK time (08:30 ET). Consensus is for headline PCE at 4.1% year on year, the hottest since April 2023 and largely energy-driven, with most desks calling it the likely peak, and core steady at 3.3% and 0.37% on the month. A hot print feeds the hike story, lifts the dollar and real yields, and keeps gold pinned. A clear miss is the most likely thing to put a floor back under it. The inflation and jobs run does not stop here either: US payrolls on 2 July and CPI on 14 July are the next dominoes into the 29 July decision, and every one of them matters for the dollar and therefore for gold.

Levels: the zone that decides the next big move

Direction Level Why it matters (confluence)
Resistance $4,000 The round number and the broken floor, now the level to reclaim; caps the bounce
Spot / zone ~$3,985, in $4,000-$3,900 Key liquidity band being tested and sold; small technical bounce in play
Pivot $3,900 The line that defines it: hold and it bases, lose it and the floor opens up
Support / target $3,500 Top of the next major liquidity pool if $3,900 breaks
Support / target $3,300 Deeper objective inside that next major liquidity region

How the desk reads it

The base case is that this $4,000 to $3,900 zone is distribution, not accumulation: a technical bounce that struggles at $4,000, then a break of $3,900 that opens a fast move into the next major liquidity at $3,500 to $3,300. But make room for the other side, because gold has fallen a long way fast. It is near-term oversold, sentiment is washed out, and an in-line or soft core PCE that trims July hike pricing could squeeze the dollar lower and give bullion a sharp relief rally back toward and through $4,000. The pivot is clean: hold $3,900 and the bounce has legs, lose it on a daily close and the deeper targets come into play. This is the desk read, cross-referenced across multiple live sources and stripped of the noise.

What changed since the last update

Gold has broken below $4,000 to an eight-month low and is getting a fragile bounce inside the $4,000-$3,900 liquidity zone; a break of $3,900 opens the next major liquidity at $3,500-$3,300, while a soft core PCE today is the main upside risk.

FAQ

Why is the gold price falling in June 2026? Gold broke below $4,000 to an eight-month low because the US dollar is near a 13-month high and CME is pricing a 37.4% chance of a July Fed hike, which lifts real yields and raises the cost of holding a non-yielding asset like bullion.

What are the key gold levels right now? XAU/USD is bouncing inside the $4,000 to $3,900 zone. $4,000 caps the bounce, $3,900 is the pivot, and a break lower opens the next major liquidity at $3,500 to $3,300.

What could put a floor under gold? An in-line or soft US core PCE that pushes the market to unwind July hike pricing would ease the dollar and real yields and could squeeze gold back up through $4,000.

Confirmed facts: the gold price and eight-month low, the dollar index 101.80 high, the core PCE consensus, the 37.4% July hike probability, the 3.50-3.75% target range and the data dates are sourced from market data providers, CME pricing, BEA and the release calendars. The level map is the desk’s interpretation, not a guarantee. Trading involves risk.
