What is driving the pound today

Cable is the chart with the cleanest two-way story today because it is trying to bounce inside a downtrend. The pair is trading around 1.3249, lifting off the 1.3161 year low after the prior day closed 1.3208, with today’s range 1.3229 to 1.3255. Sterling carries two weights at once. The first is the broad-dollar move: with the Dixie at a fresh six-month high on Warsh’s hike-bias dot plot, the pound has been pushed down to its 2026 low. The second is domestic and standing: the UK Labour leadership contest is running into the 9 July nominations, and that political-risk premium sits under the pound until it resolves.

The live UK catalysts today are the Bank of England’s Breeden on the wires and UK CBI industrial order expectations. Neither is a tier-one shock, so the broad-dollar leg stays primary.

Key GBP/USD levels for today

Direction Level Why it matters (confluence)
Resistance 1.3450 Prior-week high plus 5-day point of control, the lower high that caps structure
Resistance 1.3300 to 1.3304 Round number plus pivot R2 plus a recent swing
Resistance 1.3255 Daily pivot plus the round 1.325, today’s cap
Spot ~1.3249 Dual-sourced: Yahoo 1.3249, CNBC 1.3241
Support 1.3200 Prior-day low plus the round 1.32
Support 1.3160 to 1.3164 The year low, pivot S2, prior-week low, the line that defines everything
Support 1.3100 Pivot S3 plus the round 1.31

How the desk reads it

Read it in two layers and watch one line. The level that defines everything is 1.3160 to 1.3164: hold it on a daily close and the pair can keep basing toward the 1.3255 then 1.3300 pivots, lose it on a close and 1.3110 then 1.3100 open as the next leg lower. Today’s lift is a relief bounce inside a broad-dollar downtrend until a daily close proves otherwise.

Room for the other side

Two-sided risk is real. Today’s bounce can extend if the dollar pauses or Breeden leans hawkish, but the broad-dollar leg and the standing political premium tend to dominate first, and the 1.3450 prior-week high is the lower high that still caps the structure. Size for headline noise and respect that cap.

GBP/USD FAQ

Why is the pound bouncing today?
Cable is lifting off its 1.3161 year low in a relief bounce toward the 1.3255 pivot. Treat it as a counter-trend move inside a broad-dollar downtrend until a daily close proves otherwise.

What is the key level on GBP/USD?
The 1.3160 to 1.3164 zone, the year low. Hold it on a daily close and the pair can keep basing toward 1.3300; lose it on a close and 1.3110 then 1.3100 open.

What is capping cable?
The 1.3450 prior-week high and 5-day point of control is the lower high that caps the structure, with a strong dollar and the standing UK political premium pressing on top.
