GBP/USD Price Analysis: Cable Down Structure, Pullback into the 1.3400 Pivot (4 June 2026)

By Ken Chigbo, founder of KenMacro, 2026-06-03. GBP/USD price analysis with the desk’s read on the tape. Educational only, not financial advice.

Bias: Bearish, with a corrective pullback inside an intact downtrend. Cable sits around 1.3436, a touch under the prior close near 1.3444, and the bigger picture still points down. Price has lifted off the lows in a technical pullback, but that is a relief move within structure rather than a reversal. The level that matters is 1.3400, a very key pocket of liquidity that has been acting as the pivot. While we hold above it the pullback can stretch into resistance around 1.3460 and then 1.3500, where sellers have leaned in before. Below 1.3400 the floor goes and the downside opens up, with the broad dollar bid the engine behind that move. The dollar is tilted up on geopolitics and firmer US data, and with Non-Farm Payrolls landing tomorrow on Friday, there is event risk that can force the issue either way. Net read: respect the downtrend, watch how price reacts at 1.3460 to 1.3500 on the bounce, and watch 1.3400 as the level that decides whether this stays a pullback or turns into the next leg lower. Scenarios and levels only here, never an instruction to trade.

Where GBP/USD sits right now

Structure on cable remains to the downside and is still intact. We have come off a weak leg and into a technical pullback, which is doing what pullbacks do inside a downtrend: relieving the move and lifting price back toward old support that now reads as resistance. Spot is around 1.3436, just below the prior close near 1.3444, so the bounce has been shallow rather than decisive. The reference everyone on the desk is watching is 1.3400. That is a very key area of liquidity and it has been the pivot for this whole leg. While buyers defend it the market can keep grinding the corrective move higher, with the first hurdle around 1.3460 and a heavier shelf near 1.3500, both levels that capped price on the way down. A rejection from either keeps the bearish picture clean and hands the initiative back to sellers. The other side of the coin is a clean break and acceptance below 1.3400. That removes the floor, exposes the liquidity sitting underneath, and reopens the downside in line with the prevailing trend. The backdrop reinforces the lean lower: the dollar is tilted up on geopolitics and a run of bullish US data, which keeps cable pressured. Add Non-Farm Payrolls tomorrow on Friday and you have a clear binary catalyst, so positioning into the print is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in this chop. We treat the pullback as a move to fade structurally, not a trend change, until 1.3400 says otherwise.

Key levels (cross-referenced)

Level Value Cross-reference
Current spot (intraday) ~1.3436 Yahoo Finance, FXStreet
Prior close ~1.3444 Yahoo Finance
Very key liquidity / pivot 1.3400 Key liquidity
Structure Down, intact, in a technical pullback Swing structure
Resistance on the pullback 1.3460, then 1.3500 Pullback supply
Below 1.3400 Opens the downside Pivot break

What is driving the tape

Broad dollar strength tilted up on geopolitics and a firmer run of US data, the main weight on cable

Non-Farm Payrolls tomorrow on Friday, the binary catalyst that can force the move out of 1.3400 either way

Intact downtrend structure: lower highs and lower lows keep the technical lean to the downside

1.3400 liquidity pocket acting as the pivot, with stops and resting orders making it the decision level

Technical pullback into prior support turned resistance at 1.3460 and 1.3500, a natural place for sellers to reload

The trade the desk is watching

  • Pullback then continuation lower: price stalls into 1.3460 to 1.3500 resistance, rejects, and rotates back toward 1.3400 as the downtrend reasserts
  • Break of 1.3400: a clean move and acceptance below the liquidity pivot removes the floor and opens the next leg down
  • Pullback extends: a hold above 1.3400 lets the corrective bounce stretch through 1.3460 toward 1.3500 before sellers are tested again
  • NFP wildcard: tomorrow’s print can spike either way, so the reaction at 1.3400 and 1.3500 matters more than the headline number

What would break the trade

  • A daily close back above 1.3500 would question the bearish read and suggest the pullback has more room than a simple relief move
  • A break and acceptance below 1.3400 confirms the downside and shifts focus to the liquidity resting beneath the pivot
  • A soft NFP that knocks the dollar could stretch the bounce fast, but it takes a hold above 1.3500 to actually dent the structure

Frequently asked questions

Is GBP/USD bullish or bearish right now?

The structure is bearish and still intact, with price tilted to the downside. What we are seeing is a technical pullback inside that downtrend, not a reversal. Until cable breaks and holds above the 1.3500 region the lean stays lower, and the broad dollar bid keeps the pressure on. Treat the bounce as corrective rather than a trend change.

Why does 1.3400 matter so much on cable?

1.3400 is a very key area of liquidity and it has been the pivot for this whole leg lower. While buyers defend it the corrective pullback can continue toward 1.3460 and 1.3500. A clean break and acceptance below 1.3400 removes the floor and reopens the downside, which is why the desk treats it as the level that decides the next move.

How could NFP tomorrow affect GBP/USD?

Non-Farm Payrolls lands tomorrow on Friday and it is a binary catalyst. A firm print feeds the dollar bid and pressures cable back toward 1.3400 and below. A soft print can knock the dollar and stretch the pullback higher. Either way the reaction at 1.3400 and 1.3500 tells you more than the headline number, so watch how price behaves at those levels.

What would change the bearish view on cable?

A daily close back above 1.3500 would question the bearish read, since that level capped price on the way down and reclaiming it suggests the pullback has more behind it. Short of that, lower highs and a defended 1.3400 keep the structure pointing down. A soft dollar alone is not enough; the chart needs acceptance above 1.3500 to genuinely shift.
