US Dollar Forecast: DXY Consolidates Below 101.80 as the Macro Still Points Higher Into NFP

Last checked: 26 June 2026, 09:30 UK time. Educational only, not financial advice. Trading is leveraged and most retail accounts lose money.

The dollar is taking a breather, and that is all it is. The US dollar index (DXY, the Dixie) is trading around 101.4, easing back from Wednesday’s 13-month high of 101.80 in a textbook consolidation: some profit-taking after a hard run, with the index still on track to close the week positive. This is a pullback in price, not a pullback in the story.

The macro has not changed. It has hardened.

Read the fundamentals before the candle, because they are the whole point this week. Yesterday’s US data was uniformly hot. The May Personal Income and Outlays report showed the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, core PCE, rise to 3.4% year on year (up from 3.3%, the highest since October 2023), with headline PCE at 4.1%, and both personal income and spending up 0.7% on the month, a beat. That is not a cooling economy. That is sticky inflation alongside a resilient consumer, and it reinforces exactly the regime that has the dollar bid.

The policy backdrop is unchanged and hawkish. The Fed held at 3.50% to 3.75% on 17 June, Chair Kevin Warsh has been explicit that the committee is data-dependent and will not spoon-feed the market, and the dot plot now has 9 of 19 officials pencilling in at least one more hike by year-end. CME futures price roughly a 37% chance of a hike at the 29 July meeting and about a two-thirds chance of at least one hike by December. So the pullback you are looking at is technical. The driver underneath it still leans the dollar’s way.

Why next week matters: Warsh’s first NFP

This is the setup. Next week brings June non-farm payrolls on Thursday 2 July, the first payrolls report of the Warsh era. Because the Fed has told you it is trading the data, this print carries real weight. A hot, inflationary number, strong jobs and firm wages, feeds the hike story and the dollar. A soft one is the first thing that could deepen this pullback. Then comes CPI on 14 July into the 29 July FOMC.

Levels and what to watch

Direction Level Why it matters
Resistance / target 102.00 Next liquidity above the range high once 101.80 breaks
Resistance 101.80 The 13-month high and the ceiling to clear
Spot ~101.4 Consolidating, profit-taking after the run
Support 101.00 Round number; a higher low here keeps the uptrend intact
What changes it A soft NFP that lets the market price hold again Would turn this breather into a deeper correction

What changed since the last update

The dollar index has pulled back from its 101.80 13-month high into a higher-low consolidation, but the macro hardened: yesterday’s core PCE rose to 3.4% with income and spending both up 0.7%, keeping the hawkish hike story intact into Warsh’s first NFP on 2 July.

FAQ

Why is the dollar pulling back on 26 June 2026? The dollar index is easing from its 101.80 13-month high in a technical consolidation, profit-taking after a strong run, while the underlying macro stays hawkish after yesterday’s hot core PCE print.

Is the dollar pullback a reversal? Not on the data. Yesterday’s core PCE rose to 3.4% with income and spending both up 0.7%, reinforcing rate-hike expectations, so the desk reads this as a pause inside an uptrend rather than a turn.

What could move the dollar next week? June non-farm payrolls on Thursday 2 July, the first of the Warsh era. A hot print reinforces July hike bets and the dollar; a soft one could deepen the pullback. CPI follows on 14 July into the 29 July FOMC.

Confirmed facts: the DXY level and 101.80 high, the May core PCE and income/spending prints, the 3.50-3.75% target range, the ~37% July hike probability and the data dates are sourced from BEA, market data providers, CME pricing and the release calendars.
