What is driving gold today

Gold has a rates problem and you have to be honest about it. Warsh’s hawkish hold lifted real yields and kept them firm, and rising real yields are the cleanest headwind there is for non-yielding bullion, because capital rotates into interest-bearing Treasuries. Add a dollar at a fresh six-month high and a war premium that has already drained out of the metal, and today’s move makes sense: gold opened near 4,211 and was sold hard to 4,127.5 before settling around 4,130, a bearish wide-range down day that broke the 4,150 shelf and the 4,134.80 prior-week low.

Be clear about the two timeframes. Structure stays bearish on the higher timeframes, with price rejected at the 4,345 to 4,377 barrier last week, then rolling through 4,300, 4,250 and 4,200, and now pressing into the liquidity below. Today’s selling is the continuation of that, not a fresh shock.

Key gold (XAU/USD) levels for today

Direction Level Why it matters (confluence)
Resistance 4,345 to 4,377 Last week’s rejection barrier, the bearish cap on the structure
Resistance 4,200 to 4,225 Prior-day high plus pivot R1 plus the round 4,225
Resistance 4,150 Round number plus the broken shelf, the first cap overhead
Spot ~4,130 Dual-sourced: Yahoo 4,138, CNBC 4,117 (feeds about 20 points apart, confirm on chart)
Support 4,100 Round number plus pivot S2, the first downside objective
Support 4,050 to 4,057 Round 4,050 plus pivot S3
Support 4,031 The 11 June swing low; a daily close below opens 4,000 then 3,900

How the desk reads it

The levels that matter below are 4,100 then 4,050 to 4,057 then the 4,031 swing low from 11 June. A daily close under 4,031 opens the 4,000 round number and then 3,900. A daily close back above the 4,200 to 4,225 pivot would be the first sign the selling is pausing, and only a reclaim of 4,345 to 4,377 would neutralise the bearish read.

Room for the other side

Respect the two-sided risk because it is real. Gold is short-term oversold into a round-number cluster, so a technical bounce toward 4,150 or the 4,200 to 4,225 pivot can fire at any time, and sticky US inflation is a structural cushion under the metal. Markets do not move in straight lines: expect lower lows, bounces off those lows, pullbacks to lower highs, then continuation, and trade the level, not the headline.

Gold FAQ

How low can gold go?
Below today’s break the levels are 4,100 then 4,050 to 4,057 then the 4,031 swing low. A daily close under 4,031 opens the 4,000 round number and then 3,900.

Why did gold get sold off?
Firm real yields from the hawkish-hold Fed pull capital into interest-bearing Treasuries and out of non-yielding bullion, the war premium has drained, and the dollar is at a fresh six-month high. That is three headwinds at once.

Could gold bounce from here?
Yes. It is short-term oversold into a round-number cluster, so a technical bounce toward 4,150 or the 4,200 to 4,225 pivot can fire at any time, and sticky inflation is a structural cushion. A close back above 4,200 to 4,225 is the first sign the selling is pausing.
