What is driving gold today

Gold has a rates problem and a geopolitics problem at the same time, and you have to be honest about both. Warsh’s hawkish hold lifted real yields and kept them firm, and rising real yields are the cleanest headwind there is for non-yielding bullion because capital rotates into interest-bearing Treasuries. On top of that, the first round of US-Iran talks in Switzerland has concluded and extended the ceasefire, which drains the war premium that had been propping the metal up. Add a dollar at a fresh six-month high and the move makes sense.

The tape shows it clearly: gold was rejected at the 4,345 to 4,377 barrier we flagged last week, rolled through 4,300 and the 4,224 prior-day close, and traded down to 4,138 today before bouncing back toward 4,200.

Key gold (XAU/USD) levels for today

Direction Level Why it matters (confluence)
Resistance 4,345 to 4,377 The heavy cap, recent swing high plus pivot R2 plus 20-day SMA
Resistance 4,224 to 4,257 Prior-day close plus round 4,250 plus 21 EMA H4 plus daily pivot
Resistance 4,191 Pivot S1 flipped plus recent swing, first overhead pivot
Spot ~4,200 Dual-sourced: Yahoo 4,209, CNBC 4,193
Support 4,138 to 4,150 Today’s low plus round 4,150 plus pivot S2, the line that held
Support 4,075 Round number plus intraday shelf, next downside marker
Support 4,031 The swing low from 11 June, the major downside objective

How the desk reads it

Be clear about the two timeframes. Structure stays bearish on the higher timeframes, with price capped under the 4,345 to 4,377 zone and downside liquidity at 4,150 to 4,138 then 4,075 then the 4,031 swing low. The bounce off 4,138 is a near-term technical pullback inside that downtrend, not a trend change. A daily close back above the 4,345 to 4,377 barrier would be what neutralises the immediate bearish read.

Room for the other side

Respect the two-sided risk because it is real. The Iran ceasefire is fragile, with Lebanon fighting still live and added to the Swiss agenda, so any breakdown snaps the safe-haven bid straight back into gold. Sticky US inflation is also a structural cushion under the metal. Deep discounts plus a fragile truce are exactly how sharp relief bounces start, so respect a snapback even inside the downtrend.

Gold FAQ

Why is gold falling?
Two forces at once. Firm real yields make non-yielding gold less attractive versus Treasuries, and the US-Iran de-escalation drains the war premium that had supported the metal. A dollar at a fresh high adds to the pressure.

How low can gold go?
While price is capped under 4,345 to 4,377, the downside markers are 4,150 to 4,138, then 4,075, then the 4,031 swing low from 11 June. A daily close above 4,377 would flip the near-term read.

Is the gold downtrend over after today’s bounce?
No. The bounce off 4,138 is a near-term technical pullback inside a bearish higher-timeframe structure. The trend turns only on a daily close back above the 4,345 to 4,377 barrier.
