GBP/USD Price Analysis: Cable Bounces to 1.3400, the Desk Sells the Rip (9 June 2026)
By Ken Chigbo, founder of KenMacro, 2026-06-09. GBP/USD price analysis with the desk’s read on the tape. Educational only, not financial advice.
Cable got its bounce. The softer dollar lifted GBP/USD off the lows toward 1.3367, back up under the very key 1.3400 liquidity it broke. The desk reads this as a corrective rally into resistance, not a base. While price holds below 1.3400 we are selling the rip, with a hot CPI tomorrow the catalyst back toward 1.3250 and 1.3200.
Setup
Cable bounces to 1.3400, the desk sells the rip
GBP/USD squeezed back toward the 1.3400 liquidity it lost as the dollar eased. The desk treats it as a corrective bounce into resistance and is a seller while price stays below 1.3400, with a hot CPI the trigger lower.
Where GBP/USD sits right now
GBP/USD trades near 1.3367 after squeezing up from the 1.3305 area on the dollar pullback. The move is the pound riding the dollar leg, not sterling strength of its own. Israel and Iran signalling a pause gave risk some air, the dollar eased, and cable bounced into the 1.3400 liquidity it lost. That level was the floor, and broken support becomes resistance. While price stays beneath it, the structure is still a lower-high, lower-low downtrend and the bounce is corrective.

What is driving the tape
The dollar is the driver, not the pound. Friday’s hot US payrolls lifted Fed hike pricing and yields, and cable is trading the other side of that. Sterling’s own story is secondary while the dollar runs the tape.
Geopolitics powered the bounce. The Israel and Iran pause eased the safe-haven dollar and let cable squeeze. It is respite, not a turn, and the bid comes back to the dollar the moment that pause looks fragile.
CPI tomorrow is the resolver. A hot US inflation print, the desk’s base case, ramps hike pricing again and is the trigger to roll GBP/USD back through 1.3305 toward 1.3250 and 1.3200. A cool number is the risk and would let the bounce push the 1.3400 cap.
The trade the desk is watching
- The desk sells rallies while GBP/USD holds below 1.3400, the liquidity it lost.
- Downside on a hot CPI, 1.3305 first, then 1.3250 and 1.3200.
- Let the bounce finish into 1.3400 rather than chasing early, this is a squeeze into resistance inside a downtrend.

What would break the trade
- A daily close back above 1.3400 reclaims the floor and puts the short on hold, opening 1.3475.
- A cool CPI tomorrow softens the dollar and gives cable room to test 1.3400 from below and through.
- A full Middle East de-escalation that strips the dollar’s premium is the structural risk.

Frequently asked questions
Why is cable bouncing if the trend is down?
The bounce to 1.3367 is the pound riding a softer dollar after the Israel and Iran pause, not sterling strength. It is a corrective rally into the 1.3400 liquidity cable lost, and while price stays below that level the desk treats it as a squeeze inside a downtrend.
What sends GBP/USD lower again?
A hot US CPI tomorrow. It would push Fed hike pricing and yields up, strengthen the dollar and roll cable back through 1.3305 toward 1.3250 and 1.3200.
Where is the short invalidated?
A daily close back above 1.3400. Above there the floor is reclaimed and the bias shifts toward 1.3475. A cool CPI or a real Middle East de-escalation would be the catalysts.
