Broker Reviews, the desk’s verdict

Quick answer

Lowest Cost Broker for Active Swing Trading: the short answer from the KenMacro desk. Swing traders hold for days, so swap fees quietly eat returns. I rank the best low-swap and swap-free brokers for overnight holds and show how to cost it.

The short answer

Blueberry Markets is the cleanest all-round choice for holding positions, and Star Trader suits anyone wanting swap-free with higher leverage. Always calculate your overnight cost first.

Not a faceless list

This is not a comparison site that has never placed a trade. The desk trades these brokers live and posts the wins and the losses in the open, so you can see exactly what we are recommending and why. Judge it on the trades, not on our word.

ASIC regulated under AFSL 535887 with raw spreads and a clean execution feel for holding positions. Swap-free is available, and platform support is the widest here with MT4, MT5, TradingView and cTrader. My editor’s choice for swing traders who want a no-fuss broker.

Best swap-free high-leverage option

Star Trader

Higher leverage and a low minimum deposit around fifty dollars, with Islamic swap-free accounts available. Suited to swing traders who want to remove overnight cost while running more leverage. Offshore, so size your risk with that in mind.

Why swap, not spread, decides swing trading

When you scalp or day trade, the spread is your main cost because you are in and out fast. Swing trading is different. I hold positions for days or weeks, so the cost that matters most is swap, the overnight financing charge. A spread you pay once. Swap you pay every single night the trade stays open. Over a two week hold that can quietly outweigh the spread several times over, and most traders never notice it eating into the result. The broker that wins for swing trading is the one that keeps that overnight cost low, or removes it altogether. That is the whole game here, and it is why a cheap raw spread alone is not enough to make a broker good for holding positions.

What swap actually is, in plain terms

Every currency pair is two interest rates bolted together. When you hold a position overnight you are effectively borrowing one currency to hold the other, so you either get charged or paid based on the interest rate differential between the two. If you hold the higher yielding currency you can be paid a small amount. If you hold the lower yielding one you get debited. This swap is applied once per day, usually at the broker’s rollover time around 5pm New York. One detail catches people out: most brokers triple the swap on Wednesday to account for the weekend settlement, so a Wednesday night hold costs three nights of financing in one go. None of this is hidden, but it is rarely explained, and on a multi-day swing trade it adds up fast.

How we get paid (straight up)

Yes, the desk earns a commission if you fund through the broker links on this page, at no extra cost to you. The difference between this and most best broker lists is simple: a real macro desk stands behind it, trades these brokers with real money, and shows you the results. The incentive is visible because the trades are public. We do not ask you to trust us blindly, we show you the trades.

How to cost your overnight hold before you enter

Before I take a swing trade I work out roughly what the hold will cost in swap, the same way I work out the risk on the stop. Use the swap calculator next to this page: put in the pair, your position size and the number of nights you expect to hold, and remember to count any Wednesday as three nights. If the expected swap is a meaningful chunk of your target, that is a signal to either size down, pick a pair with friendlier swap, or use a swap-free account. The point is simple. Know the cost before you are in the trade, not after it has dragged on your equity for a week.

Swap-free and Islamic accounts: removing the cost entirely

An Islamic account, also called a swap-free account, removes overnight swap charges so you can hold a position for days or weeks without the nightly interest debit. These were designed to comply with Sharia law, which prohibits interest, but the practical effect is the same for any swing trader: no overnight financing cost. Brokers usually cover this with a small administration fee on longer holds or a slightly different fee structure, so check the terms rather than assuming free is truly free. For swing trading the maths often still works strongly in your favour, especially on pairs where you would otherwise be paying negative swap every night. All three brokers below offer a swap-free option.

My ranking for swing trading

Worth noting it does not accept UK clients. Blueberry Markets is my editor’s choice for all-round overnight holds: ASIC regulated under AFSL 535887, raw spreads, a clean execution experience, swap-free available, and the widest platform support including MT4, MT5, TradingView and cTrader. Star Trader is the option if you want swap-free combined with higher leverage and a low minimum deposit around fifty dollars, useful for traders building a swing account from a smaller base. Honest note: KenMacro earns a CPA commission if you open through these links, and my trades are public so you can check the work.

What to check before you commit

Regulation first. Then check the swap terms specifically, because the headline swap-free claim can carry an admin fee on longer holds. Confirm the platform you actually want to trade on is supported. And run your expected hold through the swap calculator before funding, so you are choosing on real numbers and not on the marketing.

Frequently asked

What is swap in forex?

Swap is the overnight financing charge for holding a position past the broker’s daily rollover. It comes from the interest rate differential between the two currencies in the pair, so you are either charged or paid each night the trade stays open.

Why does swap matter so much for swing trading?

Because swing traders hold for days or weeks, swap is paid every single night rather than once. Over a multi-day hold those nightly debits can quietly outweigh the spread, so swap is the cost that really decides whether a broker is good for holding positions.

What is a swap-free or Islamic account?

A swap-free account, also called an Islamic account, removes the overnight swap charge so you can hold for days or weeks without the nightly interest debit. Brokers may apply a small admin fee on longer holds instead, so always check the terms.

Why is swap tripled on Wednesday?

Most brokers charge three nights of swap on Wednesday to account for the weekend, when markets are closed but settlement still rolls forward. A position held over Wednesday night costs roughly three normal nights of financing in one go.

How do I calculate my overnight cost?

Use the swap calculator beside this page. Enter the pair, your position size and the number of nights you expect to hold, counting any Wednesday as three nights. If the expected swap is a large share of your target, size down, change pair, or use a swap-free account.

Is swap-free really free?

Not always entirely. Swap-free accounts remove the nightly interest charge, but some brokers cover the cost with a small administration fee on longer holds. For most swing trades the maths still works in your favour, but read the specific terms before assuming zero cost.

Does high leverage help with swing trading?

Higher leverage lets you open a position with less margin, which Star Trader offers, but it does not reduce risk. For swing trades I size on the stop distance, not the leverage available, and keep risk per trade controlled regardless of the leverage on offer.

How does KenMacro make money from this page?

KenMacro earns a CPA commission if you open an account through the links here. That does not change the ranking, which is based on swap cost and regulation. My trades are public, so you can check the work behind the calls.

General market education only, not financial advice. KenMacro earns a commission if you open an account through the broker links above, at no cost to you. Trading is leveraged and most retail accounts lose money. Spreads, terms and regulation can change, check the broker’s current terms before funding.
